Ford take the Green Prize with Fusion
November 30, 2012

At a Ceremony held at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week, the Ford Fusion 2013 was named Green Car Journal's Green car of the year. The fusion comes in five variations which include two which have ecoboost turbocharging technology, a hybrid version and a plug in hybrid.

Some of the other Green car finalists included Dodge's 2013 Dart Aero, The Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv, Totota's Prius C and Ford's other green motor, the C-Max. The editor of The Green Car Journal, Ron Cogan exclaimed that the Tesla S electric vehicle wasn't included in the consideration of the ultimate green car because of it's large invoice price and limited availability, especially for the base model. Otherwise, cars that went on sale by Jan 1st were considered.

Ron Cogan said that the fusion was chosen for it's excellent fuel efficiency, lower emissions and it's overall friendliness to the environment. It was chosen also because the models are priced in a way that could easily encourage high sales volumes and so can really influence improvements to the environment.

The starting price of the car is around £13,000 for the base model, which also earned a Top Safety Pick rating, based on the crash-testing that was carried our from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The aware was judged by panel consisted of Jay Leno, who is a TV host and automobile enthusiast and some Green Car Journal Staff. Previous winners of the aware include the Honda Civic which is powered by natural gas and the Chevrolet bolt and diesels from Volkswagen and Audi.

The base Fusion has a 2.5 Litre engine, rated for up to 34 miles per gallon, with ecoboost models achieving upto 37 miles per gallon. It's hybrid which has been rated at 47 miles per gallon will overall accelerate to 62 miles per hour on electric power alone. The Fusion Energi, which is a plug-in hybird can travel up to around 20 miles on just electricity, before the petrol-electric hybrid power kicks in, then it extends to range for atleast a 100 miles.
