Volkswagen Mid Size Coupe

Volkswagen's new midsize coupe concept was unleashed at the Beijing Motor Show 2014. Volkswagen definitely provided a highlight to the Beijing Motor Show when the wraps were taken off the striking new Midsize Coupe Concept. Klaus Bischoff led the design team, the sporty four door model, which is sitting on Volkswagen's MQB modular platform, previews a model that is ultimately destined for Chinese production.

Volkswagen's intentions for the vehicle globally however, are not as clear. Though Volkswagen have said that this model showed what customers throughout the world could expect over the next few years and it does look like a plausible rival to the Mercedes CLA that could sit under Volkswagen's CC, bosses have said that there are no plans at the moment to bring the car to Europe.

The car has dimensions of 4,597 in length, 1,422 in height and 1,838 in width, which makes this Midsize Coupe Concept wider and shorter than a Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Passat.Suggestions that Volkswagen could showcase a new Jetta model seem rather off the mark as well, as there was a revised Volkswagen Jetta model displayed at the New York Motor Show last week.

This concept achieves a low visual centre of gravity as it is called by Volkswagen thanks to the short overhands, wide front central air intake and long bonnet which has a pronounced arch. The LED headlights also featured are newly designed. At the back of the car the C pillars flow into a shorter boot lid, along with beefed up wheel arches and wide hips to emphasise the lower profile. The frameless doors and the curved roofline mirror that of the Volkswagen CC. There are huge alloys at 20 inch which add some presence to the model and sit on 245/40 tyres.

On the interior the infotainment system and the steering wheel are both borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf and the cabin is also stripped back with an uncluttered look. The car has leather seats fitted along with Ebony Black and Silk colours. The Alcantara trim is used in the roof lining and roof pillars heavily and the detailing of Dragon Red adds to the sporty feel of the car.

Space is rather generous, there is enough room for five people, along with a 500 litre luggage capacity as well. Power for the concept comes from a four cylinder 217 brake horsepower TSI engine and decent performance is a promise. The car can go from 0-62 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 152 miles per hour. Fuel economy is 44.1 miles per gallon.
